How to: Create Your Own Ringtone from YouTube
A step by step instruction using free software available.
First and foremost, please be sure that either you own the right to create the ringtone or its public property. If you do take it from YouTube and you decide to post it somewhere, please remember to mention the source. Pay them credit to invest some time and energy to provide the source of our ringtone
Preparation:
Okay, first of all, you’ll need a video downloader, flv audio ripper, mp3/audio cutter, mp3/audio merger, and an amr/wav converter for those whom phonecell can’t handle mp3.
For the video downloader, I use DownloadHelper on Firefox. If you don’t use Firefox, there’s plenty of software and website that allows you to download flv from YouTube. If you do use Firefox but you don’t have DownloadHelper, just install it here.
I use Freez flv to mp3 converter. It’s easy to use, and free. If you don’t have a converter already, Freez available to download here.
Mp3 cutter is optional. You only need this if you only want to extract a particular part of the mp3. There’s a lot of free mp3 cutter, you can easily Google it. Or you can use Mp3Cutter. It’s a free and easy to use software.
Mp3 joiner software is also optional. You need this if, for example, you only need parts from the mp3 you ripped and your mp3 now consist of more than one file. I have a problem trying to find a free mp3 joiner. Most software was either crippled version of a full product or free software that wasn’t working at all. I manage to found software that gives you 10 days trial. The software I use is EZ Softmagic Mp3 Splitter and Joiner. Ill really appreciate if somebody could point me to a free one.
The last is amr/wav converter. This is also optional. This is needed due to the fact that some people still using phonecell that can’t play mp3 (me
). For this I use Mobile Media Converter which is free, and have lots of usage.
Starting:
Downloading:
Downloading the source. First of all, you had to have a copy of the flv file on your computer. Do it in any way you can, I’ll try to explain doing it with Firefox DownloadHelper.
First go to YouTube and open the video you wish to download. Click the tiny down arrow at the right of DownloadHelper icon (
) on Firefox. You’ll be given choices of video available to download. Download your source file.
Convert to mp3:
Your downloaded video will be in a form of flv (if don’t have flv player, you can download the codec from k-lite. But this is unnecessary for the ringtone). You’ll need to convert it to mp3. For this task I use Freez, but as long as a software can convert flv to mp3, you can use them.
You’ll just need to add flv, select the output folder, and convert file. Your converted file will be a *.mp3 file.
Cutting:
In case your mp3 contain unwanted part such as silence noise, you’ll have to cut your mp3. I’ll use mp3Cutter for this task but any mp3 cutter will do. However, I’ll use mp3Cutter 4 for this tutorial example.
Mp3Cutter main desktop consist of Project Bin, Cutter, and Cue List. First you’ll have to import the source mp3 you want to cut. Click on file, import. It will appear on the Project Bin. Double click the source in Project Bin to activate them in the Cutter.
You’ll have to mark the start and end of the mp3 part you want to keep. To mark the start click
, to mark the end click
. Test your selected part using
. Then press
to put it in the cue list. You can extract more than one part from an mp3, and put it in the cue list.
After you got the part you want in the cue list, double click the part from the cue list to reactivate them in the cutter, and click
. You now have the cleaned version of the mp3.
Joining:
In case after cutting, your mp3 become more than one part, than the next thing to do is to rejoin them. I use mp3 Splitter and Joiner for this task, but any software that has the ability to join mp3 should do.
This software is really easy to use. First click MP3 Joiner, then just drag drop the mp3s, and click start merge. You’ll have to be careful about the sequence though. The sequence which shows your mp3s from top to bottom will be the sequence of your merged mp3.
This software also has splitter in it, but I didn’t use it at the pervious example because it’s not free. It does come in full function in the 10 days trial version though. I’m still searching for a free mp3 cutter.
Converting to amr:
Now that you have the cleaned version of the mp3, all you have to do is check whether you cell can play mp3. If not, using Mobile Media Converter, you can convert them to amr and wav which is supported in most cell.
However, if your cell cannot play amr or wav, then I really-really am sorry. You’ve just wasted about 2 minutes of your life reading this post. LoL.

Excellent post … lot of step-by-step instructions … I like it … and if your readers want something that would just give them access to unlimited tones then they can check out ringaholic.com Nonetheless, thanks for the great read.
